The name of this project was my attempt to make my spit balled idea sound serious. I am a big fan of call of duty and I really hate using the joystick's on game pads. I like the convenience of a console game - but I really liked mouse-controlled PC games much more. Furthermore it frustrates me that playing these games promotes such a blob-like physical interface with no real effort on the part of the gamer.
My ideal gaming environment is actually much larger in scope than this specific one. I would really like a full VR environment that makes me perform actual physical tasks in order to perform in the game. So there is a controller aspect, a visual aspect, and a motion device aspect. This project will discuss the other aspects in a thread but the project is focusing only on the controller.
Many people may instantly criticize the general idea I'm about to present due to the lack of integration with the game and game system. My stated goal is as follows:
Create a wireless gun controller for the XBox using an actual wireless controller and simulating joystick movement by translating outputs from a 3D accelerometer.
Other inputs like trigger, reloading, etc would be additional buttons on the gun controller.
Here are the components I have on hand for this project so far:
- Raspberry Pi Model B
- Toy gun with embedded micro-controller for creating sounds from trigger and other inputs.
These are on order:
- Accelerometer - www.sparkfun.com/products/10953
These are planned:
- PWM controller - www.adafruit.com/products/815
I'll expand this post as I finalize various aspects of the project.
This thread tracks the current status:

This thread talks a bit about theory and motivation behind the project:
