Well, I tried to power up my gun last night using this and it looked much more promising than the 4.5 3 AA's. Unfortunately it appears to be not enough to power the USB (current issue??) and as a result the keyboard/mouse/wireless aren't working. It does power the HDMI though so I'm able to see it fully boot otherwise. Certainly seems like it will be able to power the board when everything (HDMI/USB/Ethernet) is disabled. I didn't turn on the xbox controller though so I don't know how that drain will affect it.

Ran into this link: www.daveakerman.com/?page_id=1294He has a good suggestion for a final design assuming I'm still using RPi, which is to switch entirely to 3.3V and use a switching regulator to improve efficiency. Clearly the xbox controller can operate on 3V alone, but the RPi is very sensitive for the 5V components it seems. Need to figure out tonight what is causing my USB drop-out issue. Two wireless devices are currenly hooked up through a non-power dongle. So I should eliminate the dongle first, then remove the keyboard/mouse, then finally the wireless (but sub back in the keyboard).

Bump for Andy - this last post was the pack I bought - has more than twice the supply and does work with our setup - just a bit big, but might have a home in a revamped V3 gun.
