I was thinking about your idea of pushing forward to kickstarter and I poked around the site a little. Lots of games but not too much in the video game hardware world, which could be good.
However I did see this recently funded project not sure if you saw it…
For better or worst looks like what you where aiming at…even used that IR idea I had about zooming. But the good new is that they raised close to 200,000, so there must be some interest out there. They seem to be using a usb dongle to connect to each system, which is something I was gonna ask about, if you move forward with the project how will you really talk to the console, since I'm guessing ripping apart 360 controllers is not best way. I was curious myself and starting wandering around again, it seems most 3rd party devices use a 2.4 GHz wireless dongle, which I guess means that the builtin wireless comm, is not shared to 3rd parties. Not sure what protocol they use to talk to the system from there…and if you need a license from the console to do it. Have you done any research into that part? I don't mind poking around more, curious of how those work.
I did have a thought on what could be a cool extension of what your doing, though it would be a much larger scoped idea (maybe too big). What if you take your wireless gun controller but have customization points on it. These point would be places where you could click on accessories to not only alter the physical look/feel of the gun but then actually customize your load out in a FPS game. The idea being instead of altering/paying for digital upgrades to weapons/stats, you physically switch out parts of your gun. Players could even switch out what they need mid-match. The idea started with the thought of magazine clips that tracked how may bullets you have and if you want to reload you need to pull it out and then push it back in. Furthering that idea, different clips could have different ammo types like tracers, full metal-jackets,(or if you like more megaman style fire, ice, lightning). The clips would need to be recharged somehow, maybe in game funds, mini-games, or just reset after match. Players physical reload times would be more of a factor then. Besides clips they could add silencers, scopes, etc…all would effect their avatar or in game weapon stats. Sortof like that Skylanders game but for FPS shooters. Anyways just an idea I had today, figure I'd throw it out there.
