Oh also looking at the gun last night...I know there were issues about trying to keep the USB/Monitor ports available once the gun is closed up. I was thinking that if the Pi was placed inside the gun clip instead of the battery then some holes could be notched out to get to the ports. Where the battery goes is the next question. Also would need to make sure it would actually fit...seemed like it would.

Buttons look interesting, have to visualize 14mm - wonder if you can get different colored caps for those. Good option so long as they don't "click" like the ones I bought do - very annoying.
The power pack is a bit underpowered at 4400 - wonder how much time that would give us. Price wise its not bad.
I looked at putting the Pi in the magazine and there just isn't enough depth to it unless you took off the headers and replaced it with a harness. getting all those wires routed out of there might be an issue as well - unless, again, you built a big harness for it.
Access to those ports hasn't been a big deal for me. I've not needed it as I've used VNC with the wireless plugged in (made room for the wireless adapter). Sounds doable though - definitely would make things more accessible.

Yea the power is a little less then half the big one you have. The site says it lasted 7 hrs with wifi on and no screen, keyboard, etc... Though powering the xbox controller at the same time I'm sure would drain it quicker. I like the size of it though. The bigger one that adafruit has is a little more expensive then yours but I'm not sure if its smaller.

So got a hold of some buttons...thankfully a radioshack or two still exist. The 14mm are a little big but might be good for RB/LB I found some some smaller ones and the button itself is 9mm which is slightly smaller then the xbox buttons. The size is pretty good for the other button locations. The spring is a little strong, might be a little tiring for long game plays but for a proto I think its fine.

In your picture, you have a black and large red button. What are the sizes of those? That small red one - I have one or two of those.

The red button is the 14mm and the black button 9mm. There is an additional mm or two around the button to mount it. The small red one I plan to use for the config button

More forward progress this weekend.... 1. Started to wire up the DACs...since they share 4 of the 6 Pins (vcc,gnd,i2c pins), I stacked them on the bread board pins to save some room. 2. Started to carve out the gun. Made room for the Pi and also added the button for the weapon switching. button looks pretty good.

Sandwich looks like a good space saver. Nice spot for the weapon switch.

Decide to stick with the Xbox joystick since it would be simpler. I used some silicon to hold it in place and then drilled out a hole on the other half of the gun to allow it to fit through. Might have to make the hole slightly bigger to allow full range in the Down direction.

When you get a chance, post the details of how you mounted/cut that (when done and verified to be working well of course). This was one of the areas that was done poorly by me and having good documentation on how to do it well would be good.

At this point I got the xbox controller and Pi mounted in the gun with the main buttons wired up. Ofcourse last night I remembered that I never got the wifi working so I'm switching gears and working on getting that up and running. I must of bought a different wifi dongle, but its suppose to be compatible out of the box with raspbian...so of course its not working. I've been through most of the steps of using apt-get and it seems like the realtek drivers are installed already, but I can't get it listed in the wifi gui or scan. I'm gonna continue with the command line tools a bit more. I wonder if I need to do something so that it forgets about the wifi device that you have. I'm gonna work on the config file for the wireless network. Worst comes to worst I will buy the other one, but I see no reason why this shouldn't work.

so I updated the /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf file with my SSID and password and we are up. I guess the "Wifi config" app just doesn't work. I was able to ssh into the pi and also ping google so I think I am good now.

Got tightvnc starting automatically. Looked like the script was already in /etc/init.d but it had some formatting issues with spaces. I guess a dos to unix type issue. I just backspaced the tabs and redid them and the script worked fine.
