I was thinking that to minimize the effort involved that perhaps we could design/build our own PCB that could accept the microcontroller and wireless chip. Been reading about people using heat guns to remove SMT chips and soldering them isn't that hard.
So perhaps ultimately the only process would have to be extracting those two chips from the board - which wouldn't require any desoldering - just unscrew, heat, and replace.

That would be so much nicer. Plus we can shape it as needed to fit the chasis. Also have some standard connecters to the buttons and CPU. Which could allow switching controller boards...aka ps3
